Description:
Nino Franco has long been among my absolute favorite Prosecco producers. In a category rife with overproduction, this 100 year old winery (a distinctive rarity in Venezie) is a bulwark of quality against omnipresent mediocrity. Unfortunately, the wines are not typically inexpensive: their entry level offerings start right around $20, often the top of the line for other Prosecco producers. However, as noted above, this time of year we’re presented with some fantastic bargains, and as a result we’re able to offer “Grave di Stecca,” Nino Franco’s premier bottling, at that $20 price point (rather than the typical $40ish price point it most often strikes). This vintage-dated Brut is unique in so many ways: it offers ten years of bottle age (something that might be off-putting in most other Prosecco producers’ hands, but with “Grave di Steccas” is baked in to the winemaking), it uses grapes coming not only from a single vineyard, but from a single clos within a vineyard (a la Burgundy), and it presents beautifully in the mouth! Ripe yellow apple, golden raspberries, and grippy minerality are the focus, and a luxurious mousse gathers on the palate. “Grave di Stecca” is special and serious as a consideration for Valentine’s Day dinner, but is priced in a way that permits for it to be opened on any weeknight for fun! Food Pairings: Raspberries and Ricotta, Fried Zucchini, Fluke Crudo
